How to report a scam in Australia
ReportCyber vs Scamwatch — which one, and what to gather first.
How to report a scam in Australia
There are two official channels, and people mix them up all the time:
- ReportCyber (report.cyber.gov.au → cyber.gov.au/report) — run by the Australian Cyber Security Centre. Use it for cybercrime: phishing, identity theft, online fraud, ransomware, hacking.
- Scamwatch (scamwatch.gov.au/report-a-scam) — run by the ACCC's National Anti-Scam Centre. Use it for consumer scams of any kind: investment, romance, marketplace, text, phone, threat scams — all of it.
Lost money or handed over personal details? Also call your bank immediately, and if your identity documents are involved, IDCARE (1800 595 160) can walk you through securing them.
What to gather before you report
- Dates and times of every contact
- Amounts lost and the accounts or cards involved
- Screenshots or saved copies of messages, emails, and ads
- Links, phone numbers, and names used by the scammer
- Any transaction references from your bank
Reporting matters: every report feeds the National Anti-Scam Centre's intelligence and can help stop the same scam for the next person.
